Battle of the Books 2010!

If you like to read and you are entering grades 6 through 9 in September 2010, you could become a member of Sachem Public Library’s team for the annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books. Read the eight selected titles, come to the weekly meetings and compete to be on the team. This year’s titles will be announced on June 1. The first meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 23 at 7:00pm. Suffolk County’s Battle of the Books will take place on Saturday, August 14.

2010 Summer Reading Club for Teens begins on Saturday, June 19. Read books of your choice and win great prizes. Register and record your book reviews online. If you are looking for a good book to read, be sure to pick up a booklist in Teen Services or ask one of our friendly staff for a recommendation. Eager beavers may register early beginning Tuesday, June 1 and may pick up their materials beginning Saturday, June 19.

Teen Summer Programs
All Teen summer programs are listed in the enclosed brochure and are open to those entering sixth through twelfth grades in September 2010. Teen programs that require advance registration will register online or by telephone only.

Registration for June and July programs will begin at 9:30am on Saturday, June 12.
Registration for August will begin at 9:30am on Saturday, June 19.

Registration for all Teen programs will require a teen library card. If you are entering sixth grade in September, please upgrade your library card to “Teen”. Your new card will give you access to Teen programs and computers in Teen Services.

Teen Prom Fashion Show!

Mandatory Meeting Friday, April 9 at 7pm
For the first time ever, the Teen Services Department will be hosting a Teen Prom Fashion Show. We need teens who would like to model prom gowns and tuxedos. This mandatory meeting will provide all the details of what is involved. Interested teens, in grades 9-12, should contact the Teen Services Department for more information. Registration is required and limited. Please come in or call the Teen Services Deaprtment to register. 631-588-5024.

And then on Friday May 7th at 7pm come view the latest in prom attire as local high school teens put on a fashion show displaying dresses and tuxedos for this year’s season!

Teen Trip to see the Blue Man Group

Wednesday, March 31 (you're off from school!)
Enjoy a quick lunch in the Village then be entertained by the high-energy combination of mime, percussion, visual feats and lots of audience interaction with the Blue Man Group.

A signed permission slip is a must! Register early; space is limited. We will be leaving on a coach bus at 10:30am and will return at approximately 5:30pm.

Fee: $60 (does not include lunch)

Homework Helpers!

New for 2010!
Beginning Monday, January 4, volunteers from the English Honors Society of St. Joseph’s College will be offering free homework help to students in Grades 1-12. Assistance will be given in all subjects, including proof-reading papers. This service will be available on Monday evenings from 6:00pm-7:00pm and Saturday mornings from 10:30am-11:30am, from January through May.

2009 Battle of the Band Winners!

This years Battle of the Bands was held last Friday, November 20. Thank you to all the bands who played and to everyone who came out to watch. It was a really great night! As for the top placing bands we had the Island Effekt in 3rd place, Deficitt in 2nd place, and Let's Be Serious was our Grand Prize WINNER!!!

Teen T-Shirt Design Contest!

Calling all artists - it’s your turn to shine! Create a graphic to represent this year’s Battle of the Bands. Your design should be no larger than 8.5 X 11 inches in size in black and white. The graphic must include Sachem Public Library, Battle of the Bands or BOTB and the year 2009. Entries must be submitted to Teen Services no later than Friday, October 23. The winning logo will appear on a limited edition T-shirt which will be available for purchase at the Battle.

Go to Last.fm,, set up a profile, download the Scrobbler (which will send the songs you listen to right to your Last.fm profile), then join the Sachem Public Library Teen Services Group and let’s see what happens!
